Pennsylvanians tickled by a MUTTS mention

PA readers were thrilled to see Harrisburg get some love in a recent MUTTS strip! The website asked Patrick about the Keystone State shoutout, as well as the unasked joke in the August 6, 2014 comic.

The unseen question was “What’s the capital of Pennsylvania?” according to the strip’s cartoonist, Patrick McDonnell.

“I was trying to think of a question that some people get stumped on, and I think that’s one that people get stumped on,” said McDonnell, who lives in New Jersey. “Being so close to Pennsylvania, I thought I’d give a shoutout to Harrisburg.”

McDonnell chose not to include the question in the strip in order to keep the chat between Earl and the dolphin conversational, instead of like a pop quiz.

“I think if you ask the question, the punch line wouldn’t have been as big of a surprise,” McDonnell said. “It was because they were having a conversation rather than a quiz.”
