As we begin to return to more normal summer activities, it is vital to protect our animal family members from outdoor dangers. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind during the hot summer months.

Know When The Car Is Too Hot

Picture it. You and your animal friend are enjoying a nice ride together, and suddenly you remember you need to pick up something from your local grocery store before heading home. Moments like this occur all the time, but be mindful of how hot is too hot for your animal companion. For example, 75 degrees is considered potentially unsafe for dogs. Another important thing to keep in mind is that animals can die of a heat stroke within 15 minutes.

To be safe, please take your animal friend home before getting started on your to-do list. They’ll be happily waiting for you — with cozy cuddles — when you get back.

Protect Their Paws

Asphalt attracts heat during the summer, making it harmful to animal paws. Signs that your animal’s paws may be damaged include limping, blisters, or redness. To see if the pavement is safe, try checking it with the backside of your hand for three seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s more than likely too hot for your animal friend.

You can help to protect their paws by taking them out during cooler periods such as the morning or evening or by dressing them in animal booties. There are also animal sunscreens that can protect animals from sun-related harm.

Fight Against Fleas and Ticks

Did you know that fleas and ticks thrive during warmer temperatures? These small pests often go unnoticed by the naked eye, but they can transmit diseases and irritate the skin. Using tools such as a flea comb can help you identify any flea presence and quickly get the proper treatment. Consult with your veterinarian, who can recommend the right products to prevent and treat flea and tick issues all year round.

Make sure your animal companion has fun this summer — safely! As always, give them plenty of water to keep them hydrated and keep them in cool spaces.

Enjoy your summer!
