A recent tumultuous storm has heavily impacted the lives of Texans and those in surrounding areas. Millions have endured days without electricity, heat, water, and in some cases, shelter. During this state of emergency, animals and their guardians have needed help to stay warm, stay together, and so much more, more than ever.
To help our fellow animal lovers in need, we have created a list of organizations doing impressive work to help pets and parents overcome the challenges caused by winter storms.
Austin Pets Alive!
Austin Pets Alive! is working around the clock to aid animals, including: reuniting displaced animals with their families, helping at-risk shelter animals, and transferring adoptable animals to other areas such as Chicago, IL, and Salt Lake City, UT. They are also accepting in-kind donations for animal parents (crates, cat litter, pet food, paper ID collars, etc.), and have supplies available for those in need outside of their Town Lake shelter, located at 1156 West Cesar Chavez Austin, TX 78703.
Feeding Pets of The Homeless
The homeless, who already face struggles daily, were thrust into dire circumstances due to the recent snowstorm. Feeding Pets of The Homeless has taken on the mission of feeding and providing basic emergency veterinary care to pets of homeless guardians. Since many shelters do not allow animals, the organization is offering crates to shelters, free to be used by homeless pet parents. This effort keeps guardians and animal companions warm and together through these harsh times.
St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center
St. Hubert’s, headquartered in New Jersey, operates several animal shelters and provides a variety of community services including pet adoption, humane education, a pet food pantry, and more. To help alleviate stress off of storm-impacted shelters, St. Hubert’s is welcoming adoptable dogs and cats from affected shelters in Texas. Thus far, animals have been flown in with the help of Wings of Rescue and ASPCA, with most animals coming from the Humane Society of North Texas. St. Hubert’s is working diligently to keep these animals safe and placed in loving homes.
Never Muzzled
Never Muzzled is a nonprofit organization that speaks up for backyard dogs and hosts community outreach projects to educate the public about the dangers of keeping a dog outside. In response to the icy weather, Never Muzzled is offering free straw to guardians of outdoor dogs and cats through their animal straw program. Animal parents in need of straw can contact the organization for more information.
Greater Good
Greater Good Charities is a charitable organization focusing on improving the well-being of animals, people, and the planet. The organization is accepting donations to help impacted people and pets through their disaster fund. The fund is being used for hunger relief for families without power, veterinary medical support funding for injured or affected pets and wildlife, emergency cash grants to impacted groups, and more.
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Texas
This organization, consisting of two shelters and three spay/neuter clinics, has served Texas residents and pets since 1938. The SPCA of Texas is supporting adoptive animal parents by providing food and medical assistance. Those in need can fill out a service form here or email spca@spca.org.
