The Shelter Pet Project is a public service ad campaign to encourage humans looking for new companion animals to look in shelters first. HSUS, Maddie’s Fund and the Ad Council have joined forces to help educate people on the importance of adopting shelter animals. The Shelter Pet Project launched in 2009 and has been helping spread the word that pets in shelters are wonderful and lovable ever since.

The ad campaign promoting the Shelter Pet Project includes some notable animal celebrities such as globally recognized pianist, Keyboard Cat, life of the party, Hamilton the dog, and sassy fashion icon, Toast. These larger than life animal personalities all have one main thing in common, they started their stories in a shelter.

The Shelter Pet Project includes many online resources to help educate people on the pet adoption process, and provides a variety of other facts for people considering adopting a new companion animal so that they start their new relationship prepared. In addition to all the practical information, there are plenty of real adoption stories to warm your heart in the adoption story section of their site as well. There is also a section to upload you and your animal friend’s information to the site so that you can share your personal story in the #StartAStoryAdopt Spotlight section.
