Spring 2018 Donation Update: How Your Purchases Have Helped Animals

Animals News & Events

In August of last year, we announced that every purchase at the MUTTS Shop would benefit animals. Since then, we’ve donated at least five percent of our sales to The Humane Society of the United States’ Animal Rescue Team. (In September 2017, we doubled our donation rate — to ten percent — to assist with the team’s relief efforts after Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria.)

Each year, the rescue team saves thousands of animals from puppy mills, animal fighting operations, natural disasters, and other life-threatening situations. We at Team MUTTS applaud the accomplishments of these skilled professionals (see one of our interviews with them here), and have been following their work closely in recent months.

Here are some of the ways your purchases have helped them to rescue and care for animals in need.

Evacuating Animals After Hurricane Maria

When Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico, the rescue team launched a transport to evacuate 2,000 adoptable dogs and cats from the devastated island. This transport was conducted in cooperation with the Puerto Rican government, and the animals were placed safely in shelters with assistance from St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center.

The HSUS also persuaded several airlines to allow the transport of pets out of Puerto Rico — then facilitated assistance and provided crates for owners trying to evacuate with their beloved furry family members.

Shipping Critical Supplies for Animals and Humans

With help from South Florida Wildlife Center, the rescue team also organized dozens of relief flights and shipments. To date, they have delivered 300,000 pounds of human and animal supplies to severely affected neighborhoods on mainland Puerto Rico and the island of Vieques.

Staying the Course: Veterinary Clinics and Disaster-Relief Grants

In December 2017, the rescue team hosted a series of veterinary clinics on the hard-hit island of Vieques. During these clinics, the team treated 350 animals who were brought in by concerned guardians and residents.

Since then, The HSUS has continued to maintain a presence in Puerto Rico. They have provided emergency disaster-relief grants to animal shelters, and are working with FEMA to conduct a continual assessment of needs and to deliver more supplies.

Thank you for your support!

We sincerely appreciate your purchases and additional charitable contributions. Thank you for your support of MUTTS and the The HSUS’ Rescue Team, and for joining us in helping animals in need.
