A Note From Patrick: April 2021

Animals Nature People

It’s April, one of my favorite times of the year, bringing with it both Jane Goodall’s birthday (April 3) and Earth Day (April 22). The days are getting longer in the northern hemisphere, trees are flowering, and the birds are back. I awaken every morning, just before dawn, to the twittering of so many species (and the meowing of one).

Last week I finally sat down and watched two incredible Netflix documentaries — My Octopus Teacher and Seaspiracyboth of which have the same message but are told in very different ways. I highly recommend both.

Start with My Octopus Teacher, in which Craig Foster documents his befriending of an octopus. The experience completely changed the way he sees the world. You will come away with a greater appreciation and empathy for all life. It is a reminder that we all share this beautiful home, planet earth. Seaspiracy, at the opposite end of the spectrum, shows man’s destruction of the oceans and all life in it, and how everything about that must end. This one is very difficult to watch, especially as an animal lover, but knowledge is power.

With my new book, MUTTS Go Green, MUTTS is playing a role in encouraging all of us, and children in particular, to take action to make the world a better place. It includes a large selection of animal-friendly and environmentally themed MUTTS strips from over the years, combined with earth-friendly tips.

Wishing you a happy Earth Day — go out in nature and have some fun!

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” — Jane Goodall

  1. “It has been all over my news feed and in discussions with folks who work in marine conservation. While it gets the conversation going about important marine topics, ultimately it is full of misinformation and quotes taken way out of context from leading scientists. Their takeaway is that veganism alone will solve the ocean’s problems and they don’t even mention climate change or any other major threat. Lots of researchers I respect are outraged. Not great!” CHARLES ROLSKY ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Patrick knows my son. https://newsroom.asu.edu/expert/charles-rolsky
