Meet Sparky & Doozy
Fall back in love with the story of Doozy and Sparky (formerly known as Guard Dog). Their journey of friendship, hope, and resilience has touched the hearts of millions, inspiring countless animal lovers to speak up for chained dogs and other animals in need.

Sparking Hope: Love Finds a Way
Guard Dog (now lovingly known as "Sparky") made his debut in the MUTTS comic strip in 1995. For nearly three decades, he lived at the end of a chain. He suffered from loneliness and neglect, but maintained a spark of hope with help from his best friend, a young neighborhood girl named Doozy. She showed him love, brought him blankets and treats, and reminded him he wasn't alone in the world.
In late 2023, Guard Dog’s freedom story began to unfold in a harrowing seven-week storyline. After being abandoned by his owner and left alone to suffer, Guard Dog was ultimately rescued by Doozy and Ozzie (Earl’s guardian). On November 30, Ozzie broke the chain for good. On December 14, Doozy adopted Guard Dog — marking the end of a long life of neglect and the beginning of one filled with love.
For years, Guard Dog spent his days and nights chained, with only the moon (and an occasional animal visitor) to keep him company.

But there was one human who saw him, and cared.

Her compassion was a shelter in the storm.

She reminded him that he was a good dog, deserving of love.

Despite his sad situation, he was eager to show affection.

Some nights on the chain were especially lonely. But Doozy was a source of warmth — and hope.

He dreamed of being adopted by her. And she dreamed of it, too.

One day, Doozy went away to visit family. She promised she'd be back soon.

But while she was gone, everything changed.
Guard Dog's owner moved away ... and abandoned him.

For days, with no humans to bring him water or food, Guard Dog languished at the end of his chain.
By the time his animal friends Mooch and Earl found him, he was barely clinging to life.

When Doozy returned, she saw the abandoned house and discovered that her friend, now terribly weak, had been left all alone — still on the chain.
With help from Earl, she enlisted Ozzie's help. Finally, they removed the chain.

Ozzie hurried Guard Dog to the animal shelter clinic, and Doozy rushed home to tell her mom.

Guard Dog was severely malnourished, but the wonderful animal shelter staff nursed him back to health. For the first time ever, Guard Dog was surrounded with the love, respect, and care he deserved. It was like heaven.

On December 14, 2023, the two friends' dream came true.

Doozy gave him a new home, a new life, and a new name.

Guard Dog — now Sparky — still talks to the moon at night.

And in the morning, he wakes up with his best friend.

He was always a good dog, but now he's a happy dog, too. All because someone helped.
